What is rafting? What is rafting like on the Soča River in Slovenia?

Briefly about this sport

This article is first and foremost for those who have never been on a whitewater rafting trip and have no idea how it all works. And for those who are scared to do it, but still have the curiosity to find out what rafting is like.

Whitewater rafting is an extreme sport where 4-12 people paddle down on rapids in a rubber raft.
On the Soča River in Slovenia, 8+1 person rubber rafts are used, the +1 person is the guide, who has the appropriate professional qualifications and experience, and is in charge of the boat and guides the people when to do what.

You don't need any experience to take part in a rafting trip on the Soča River, all you need is a good swimming ability.
We take care of all the necessary equipment, all you need to bring is a swimsuit/bathing suit and a towel. You will be provided with neoprene clothing and shoes to keep you warm, a helmet, a swimming vest and a paddle.
At the beginning of the tour, your guide will give you a safety and paddling instructions and there will be a little practice at the first part of the river section, so you won’t have any problem paddling the bigger rapids later on.

How can you imagine this?

Your guide will be the helmsman and you will be the boat's engine. Your guide will give you instructions on what to do in the boat, when and how far forward or backward to paddle ("all forward"), when to sit down in the bottom of the boat in case of a big swell, and when to get back into position.
Also, on the more gentle, meandering section, there is time for your guide to tell you a bit about the area, what else you can try or do in the valley, where to visit, etc..
During our tour, we also stop to jump in the water and also there will be an opportunity to slide into it too, especially on hot summer days, to freshen everyone up a bit, and depending on the water level you can also try swimming the last rapid.

Rafting tours on the Soca River

One of Europe's most famous and best-known whitewater river, with unparalleled beauty, emerald green water and a wide range of difficulty levels. Beginners and experts alike will find a river section to suit them and their skills. Thanks to it’s proximity to the sea, winter is over sooner and you can paddle the river from mid-March until the end of October (15 March to 31 October).

The river is replenished in spring by melting snow in the mountains and in summer and autumn by rainfall, which flows into the Soča River through the surrounding limestone mountains.
In the spring and early summer, you can go on a longer rafting trip (All-day rafting trip), while in the summer you can only raft a shorter stretch of the Soča River (Half-day rafting).
